Wilkinsburg Aldi on Penn Avenue

Aldi’s continued expansion

A new Aldi store is set to open this week in Wilkinsburg.

The discount grocer announced that it will open a new location at 7401 Penn Ave. on Thursday, Aug. 15. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 8:45 a.m., and the store will officially open to customers at 9 a.m.

It’s part of Aldi’s continued expansion in the Pittsburgh region. The company, which operates more than 2,300 stores in the U.S., has opened several new locations in western Pennsylvania in recent years, including in Bridgeville, Coraopolis, and Ross Township.

The Wilkinsburg store will feature the company’s updated layout, which includes more refrigeration space for fresh produce, dairy, and meat. It will also have wider aisles and additional grab-and-go options.

In addition to the new Aldi, a Fresh International Market will open next door later this year at 7403 Penn Ave. The international grocery store chain specializes in Asian products and fresh seafood.

The two stores replace a former Giant Eagle location that closed in 2021. The redevelopment of the site is part of ongoing efforts to revitalize the Penn Avenue corridor.

Fresh International Market, which started in East Lansing, Michigan, in 2012, has since expanded to multiple states. The company offers a range of imported goods, fresh produce, meats, and prepared foods catering to diverse culinary tastes.

Wilkinsburg officials say the addition of these two grocery stores will provide residents with more options for affordable and culturally diverse foods.

“Having both Aldi and Fresh International Market opening in Wilkinsburg is a great win for the community,” said Wilkinsburg Mayor Dontae Comans. “It brings more shopping options, creates jobs, and puts life back into a property that has been vacant for far too long.”
